The simplest definition of metadata is that it is data about data. For example, creation data and original owner. The point is that data without some factual information about the meaning and provenance of the data will quickly be rendered useless.

Automatic metadata capture: the RCommands
One big challenge in the area of metadata is automatic capture. the eMinerals project has developed a web-services framework called the RCommands, which includes a set of interactive and scriptable shell commands.
