Portal

Web Portals are sites on the World Wide Web that typically provide personalised capabilities to their visitors.They are web based applications that commonly provide personalisation, single sign on, content aggregation from different sources and hosts the presentation layer of information systems. They are designed to use distributed applications, different numbers and types of middleware and hardware to provide services from a number of different sources. In addition, business portals are designed to share collaboration in workplaces. A further business-driven requirement of portals is that the content be able to work on multiple platforms such as personal computers, personal digital assistants (PDAs), and cell phones.

Grid portal

Grid portal is "a web based application server enhanced with necessary software to communicate to Grid services and resources”. It provides access to Grid technologies through sharable and reusable components for web-based access to domain-specific applications. Grid portal is built upon the familiar Web Portal model, such as Yahoo or Amazon, to deliver the benefits of Grid computing to virtual communities of users,providing a single access point to Grid services and resources.

  • User-oriented portal (e.g. UNICORE)
  • Development-oriented portal (e.g. GPDK, GridSphere)
