The Robust Audio Tool is the multicast tool for handling audio within the Access Grid. On activation, you see the panel shown in the figure on the right.

The top of the window contains check boxes for listening and talking. By default, the listening box is checked and the talk box is not. This portion of the window contains updated information on the network data transfer rates for both transmission and reception, and a horizontal bar to indicate the sound levels. The sound levels for both reception and transmissions can be set with the slider controls.

The main part of the window contains panels for each participant. By clicking these you can obtain information about the individual participant and change settings for sound reception.

Buttons along the bottom enable you to record the audio feeds, check for quality, and switch balloon help on and off. The main button at the bottom is to enable various options to be set.

Options

  • Personal: To provide information about your name and contact details for transmission to other participants.
  • Transmission: Allows you to select codecs for transmission.
  • Reception: Settings for repair scheme, sample rate conversion and limits for playout delay.
  • Audio: Enables you to select alternate audio devices. This also has settings for issues such as silence suppression and echo suppression.
  • Codecs: This panel provides all available codecs. Some of these provide quality that effectively matches that provided by the default codec but with greatly reduced network transmission requirements. This panel is well worth playing with!
  • Security: This panel enables you to enable encryption of the audio transmission with a key you can give.
  • Interface: Enables you to disable various features.
