Basic information

VIC is the multicast video tool used by the Access Grid.

Figure 1 shows the main window displayed by vic. The key components are the thumbnails for each video feed, and the "menu" button.

In order to display each video feed, click on the thumbnail. This will create a window for each video feed. Each window can be in three sizes, which you can change by holding the mouse pointer over the window and typing either S, M or L corresponding to:

  • Small
  • Medium
  • Large

The menu window is shown in Figure 2. The important controls are:

  • The Transmit button. This needs to be checked in order to transmit video.
  • Two Rate Control sliders. These control the maximum value for both the data transfer rate and the number of frames sent per second.
  • The Encode items. Usually these are not touched. The various buttons select the video codecs that are available. The Quality slider selects the quality of the images: lower numbers mean higher quality.
  • The Display items. The Tile option enables you to change the way that you tile the video thumbnails.
  • The Session items. This displays information about IP address and port numbers. The Name item changes the name displayed by other participants.
